Connecting art and religion

This year, I was incredibly fortunate to have the chance to participate in a field trip to Dunhuang, China as one of the lucky students enrolled in the ‘Making Pictures in Medieval China’ course offered at the Art History Department of the University of Toronto. Led by professor Jenny Purtle and funded by the Getty Foundation and as part of the ‘Global and Postglobal Perspectives on Medieval Art and Art History’, a three-year collaborative initiative that aims to connect art histories and increase international intellectual exchange, the field trip to Dunhuang was the perfect way to wrap up the amazing learning experience.

Taught by guest professor Yudong Wang of the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts (GAFA) in China, who was also one of the supervising scholars on the trip, the course ‘Making Pictures in Medieval China’ covered diverse topics on Medieval Chinese Art, from early medieval funerary objects in Central China to late medieval Buddhist art on the Silk Road. Dunhuang, as one of the most significant sites of Buddhism and Buddhist art in China, was of course the main focus of the course and the destination of our class field trip.

Under the supervision and guidance of U of T scholars Jenny Purtle, Jill Caskey, Linda Safran and Adam Cohen along with GAFA scholars Yudong Wang, Qingquan Li, and Qingquan Zou, students from U of T lived, studied, and collaborated with students from GAFA over the course of ten days from May 15 to 25 in Dunhuang. We visited more than thirty caves at the Mogao Grottoes and at the Yulin Grottoes, many of which were not often open to the public. Students from U of T and GAFA prepared presentations everyday to be given on site. For each cave that we visited, two or more presentations were performed on different aspects of the cave, such as its history, painting technique, iconography and religious significance. In addition, the students from U of T also presented their final term papers in the specific caves that they researched on. Another M.A. student from our department and my fellow colleague in Buddhist Studies, Shum Cheuk Shing also participated in the field trip and presented his paper on the Hindu deities painted on both sides of the main Buddha sculpture in Mogao cave 285. I presented my paper “Patrons of the Steppes: A Look into the Mongol Presence at the Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes” on one of the most esoteric caves at Mogao – cave 465. I was supremely honored to be able to share my research with my peers right inside the cave, which has not been opened to the public since the 1980s due to its sensitive content and history. In my paper and presentation, I problematized the conventional dating of cave 465 to the Mongol Yuan Dynasty and suggested that it was a cave maintained in a combination of efforts of different cultures of people from different dynasties but under the same politico-religious agendas. I clarified the relationship between the Xixia Kingdom (when the cave was first constructed) and the Mongol Yuan Empire (when additional donor paintings and inscriptions were added to the cave) and focused on how Tibetan Buddhism became a highly politically practical tool for the making and ruling of both imperial states.

The students on the trip from both institutions of U of T and GAFA came from different disciplines. While most participants on the trip were graduate students of Medieval Art History, there were also a few participants from different disciplines such East Asian Studies and Religious Studies who work on Chinese Art and/or Buddhism. It was incredibly interesting and invaluable to see the various approaches to methodology taken by students of different academic backgrounds. Out of impassioned discussions and our collaborative efforts to construct global and postglobal perspectives on Art History, Dunhuang emerged at the end as a perfect site to negotiate issues of the global vs. the postglobal and as a remarkably relevant field in which more interdisciplinary collaborations between international scholars of history, art, and religion should be encouraged.

From Buddhism to bioethics

I suppose it’s possible for me to locate my earliest interest in religious ethics to my childhood fascination with the precepts of the Torah, and it was in my late teens that I was first exposed to Buddhist discipline texts. Buddhist codes of conduct were indeed so influential that it led me to pursue monasticism, and remained my focus into graduate studies and expanded into other Indic systems as well. The original idea I had for my doctoral project was for it to be a textual exploration into how medicine appears in the various Buddhist monastic texts. As a Buddhist monk, I needed to find a beneficial livelihood to contribute to the temple community I belonged to in Toronto, and this prompted the idea of pursuing paramedical training but ended up with my certification as a Health Care Aide (now Personal Support Worker) from George Brown College. I started volunteering at the (now nonexistent) Wellesley Hospital Emergency Room to get my foot in the door, and as soon as I was credentialed I was hired. I also worked in an assisted living apartment complex caring for adults with physical disabilities.

These were the early steps in my first career in healthcare, and with it came exposure to the ethical dilemmas that constantly arise in hospitals. In fact, on day one I immediately observed ambulance attendants transfer a frail elderly woman howling in pain and I was shocked at how cold they seemed to be, and sickened when I overheard laughter over their ambulance-driving causing traffic collisions. Very green, and fairly sheltered up to this point, I was already worried about health care professionals lacking integrity and potentially being harmful in the context of what I considered a sacred duty and a vocational calling.

These problematic cases during my years of caregiving would pile up, and my contemplation of solutions and how I could be more useful in tackling the trouble-spots along the healthcare trajectory increased. It was upon transferring to an HIV/AIDS ward, renowned at the time and located in the heart of Toronto’s LGBT neighbourhood, that my strong connection with end-of-life care began. This was a moment just on the cusp of new antiretroviral cocktails effectively transforming the disease from a terminal diagnosis to a chronically manageable disease, but I still was caring for young people my age as they approached death. In one case I had to remove myself from a patient room to quietly sob at the tragedy before me. I became very involved in HIV advocacy and pursued further training in multidisciplinary palliative care at Sheridan College.

My first contact with ethics practice in the clinical setting was hearing about an ethics committee at St. Michael’s Hospital which I moved to after the slated closure of ten local hospitals, including the Wellesley, by our Premiere of the time Mike “the Knife” Harris. I requested to join the committee and although it never materialized, the bioethics seed had been planted. After several years on a heamatology/oncology/infectious disease ward, with some palliative care and hospice shifts on occasion, I left to study in India for several years. Each year I would return for a month to visit family around the holidays and would do nursing assistant shifts through an agency to fund my airfares. When I returned to Toronto, I went back to both caregiving and the academy and these two spheres soon would begin to interact with each other.

I started to receive requests to speak at GTA hospitals and to university healthcare trainees on caring for Buddhist patients and families. This was part of attempts by departments such as spiritual care and social work to improve cultural and religious competency, in order to better meet the needs of increasingly diverse patient populations. My background in Buddhist studies and practice had started to become useful beyond the bedside. At one grand rounds presentation, an attendee asked what the Buddhist stance was on organ donation. On the spot, I had some thoughts about the tension between the principle of generosity and post-mortem practices to safeguard the transmigrating consciousness from disturbances, but this led to a research project to better answer the question.

Here, the concerns of health care professionals gave me direction in my academic work. I made a major shift from caregiving on a general internal medicine ward to a trauma-neurosurgical intensive care unit, mainly because I had become weary of nurses asking me to operate beyond my scope of practice. In critical care, instead of being responsible for the personal care of upwards of ten patients with a fair bit of self-direction, I would be available to all nurses and their patients as the need arose and be well within my scope of practice because of it being one-to-one nursing. My memory is patchy of the exact moment, but it seems that it was in this new environment that I worked closely with a Clinical Ethicist for the first time. This particular ethicist came to bioethics from a mental health nursing background, and has been a mentor to me since and every step of the way gave me encouragement and guidance as I delved into academic bioethics. It is safe to say that he was my inspiration to follow in his footsteps and eventually become a bioethicist myself.

As I entered grad studies, I started the first of two degrees with a collaboration in bioethics. U of T’s Joint Centre for Bioethics (JCB) offers a Masters in Health Science in bioethics which many health care professionals take part-time to inform their clinical practice. A pediatric physician colleague with whom I shared classes (and we now sit on a Medical Assistance in Dying task force together) is a good example of someone who is now better equipped to add an effective ethics lens to her clinical and committee work as a result of taking the program.

As a Collaborative Program in Bioethics (CPB) student, I had to take extra bioethics courses, take ethics-relevant courses in religious studies, and ensure that my research projects had relevant bioethics content. Some students have asked me if taking a program in bioethics itself is a good way to prepare for a future career, and although I think it is positive that such programs now exist, I am not the only ethicist who feels that it might be better to come to bioethics by way of another field. Still a relatively young discipline, tracing back to theologians in the 70s and still as of yet unprofessionalized, one of the strengths of the field is the variety of backgrounds among its members: medicine, nursing, law, philosophy, public health, social work etc. As a result, each will bring their own unique style and approach health ethics consultation.

As with the first moment I thought to become a bioethicist, I am also a bit unclear as to when I found out about the fellowships in Clinical and Organizational Bioethics. I initially thought there was only one available in Toronto, but in fact there are two: a two-year program at the JCB, and a one-year program at the Centre for Clinical Ethics (CCE). At another hospital rounds I delivered, on Buddhist and Jain ways of dying, I was told by the Director of the CCE that there were two distinct fellowships (complicated by the fact that there were years where the CCE fellowship was in affiliation with the JCB) and that because of my being in religious studies the CCE fellowship would be well suited to me. Years later, I agree both because the CCE does bring religious discourse into the work of ethics as it provides consultation services in both faith-based and non-faith-based hospitals, as well as the fact that I have worked closely with several of the CCE ethicists over the years in hospital and through the CPB since one of the CCE’s former ethicists sat on my Masters thesis committee as they were also faculty.

The CCE is the first of its kind in Canada, a Catholic ethics service that is a joint venture of the three Toronto Catholic hospitals of St. Michael’s, St. Joseph’s and Providence and which provides ethics consultation to twelve Ontario hospitals.

The Director had encouraged me to take the fellowship, I made sure to attend the annual CCE conference and introduce myself to the fellowship intake Director, and knowing several of the CCE ethicists I also knew that this was a group of people I wanted to work with into the future. While in the midst of six months of field-work in India, during the second half of which my wife Alex joined me, we were in Kerala and I gave myself a couple of weeks of dedicated time to apply for the upcoming fellowship. I am glad that I did, but I knew that if I wasn’t accepted I would have the chance to apply to the JCB. Always having my eye on the prize of job prospects, I had a backup plan as I did with my PhD application process during which I thought that I could pursue either chaplaincy or a funeral director program if it didn’t work out. I struggled a bit with the fact that if I did the fellowship it would delay my dissertation writing, but I didn’t want to miss my chance as having a completed doctorate was preferred but not a requirement for the fellowship. Logistically, it made sense to take a one-year academic leave and return for my fifth year after the fellowship was completed.

The fellowship itself was a very intense experience but with incremental responsibilities. In general, we spent four days of the work-week rotating between the three partner sites and occasionally some of the other hospitals. One day a week was for independent research and attending the weekly JCB seminar series. Each hospital we spent time at has a main ethicist who were site-supervisors, and we attended all of their activities as well as receiving instruction by way of education modules on various topics such as ethics consultation and healthcare legislation. Some days were filled with consults such as meeting with patients, families and teams to assist with difficult decision-making moments, such as whether to withdraw life-sustaining treatment like ventilation from a brain-dead person or not.

Some days had us attending daily rounds on various units during which each patient is discussed by teams, and at times the presence of the ethics service will allow for discussions that might otherwise not happen. Being with each supervisor gave us a glimpse into their daily work-life and exposed us to their respective styles of practicing clinical ethics. Some have more of a research focus, some more of what we might call a pastoral approach where the focus is building on relationships, some have a good mixture of various approaches. There were two of us doing the fellowship at the same time, and I am forever grateful that this was the case. My co-fellow and I got along like gangbusters and were able to spend a great deal of time together to work on theoretical ethics, legislation, actual and fictional cases, policy, and support each other through the challenges of the program. Oddly enough, I might have learned more from him (a brilliant philosopher from Harvard) than anyone during the fellowship, which in part might be quite natural since we were practically joined at the hip for a year!

The first half of the fellowship seemed more like an observership, but as we completed core modules and got some practice with actual and mock consults, the second half had us with more duties and independence. For example, at one site we started to spend days there together doing various ethics-related activities that had us getting to know staff up to but not yet including consultation: journal clubs, attending rounds, presenting at orientations for new staff, and assisting with the lead-up to accreditation. This was an indispensable experience to start to get the sense of what our days as aspiring ethicists of the future would be like, through lower-stake activities, and also to prepare for integrating at a site of our own in the future.

Although dissertation writing was limited for me during the course of that academic year, because there was time dedicated to independent research and opportunities to give presentations, I was able to keep some continuity going with my research data. My project is a combination of medical anthropology and textual analysis, and I interviewed about 60 religious adherents in India and Canada (including biomedical and traditional medical professionals, and non-medical people) from the Indic traditions as well as the Semitic religions. I am investigating end-of-life decision-making, along with some other themes that have shown up such as the interaction between biomedical and traditional healthcare systems, and the effect of migration, gender and vulnerability on healthcare access. Early on in the fellowship I started to work on a chapter on health information sharing since I have interesting ethnographic data on the subject, particularly around the issue of withholding difficult diagnoses or poor prognoses, and the delivery of bad news.

However, I was invited by the International School of Jain Studies to present at a conference series in India on the topic of Jain and Buddhist ritual fasting and immobilization at the end-of-life. This redirected my writing and I moved onto another chapter on the relationship between religion, medicine and the law in end-of-life care and ritual. I took two weeks vacation halfway through the fellowship to attend the conference events in India at the National Law University in Delhi and the Tirthanker Mahaveer Medical College in Moradabad. One of the fellowship requirements was to present research at the three Toronto Catholic partner hospital sites, and for these I presented on Buddhist healthcare decision-making and Caring for Buddhist patients and families, a combination of academic and clinical observations. During the fellowship I also had the pleasure of presenting as part of the 20th anniversary JCB seminar series. For this, I gave a different version of the India talks because the audiences were vastly different. For example, in Canada I needed to give full historical context to the legal battles in India against the Jain community and their practice of fasting at the end of life with accusations of suicide and abetting suicide seemingly in breach of the criminal code. In India, I needed to explain the Canadian provincial approaches to consent and capacity, tendencies with regard to pain management and sedation, and our local distinctions made between withdrawal of overly burdensome treatment and hastening death. At all of my presentations I was able to share new ethnographic and statistical data.

Happily, there were staffing needs at the CCE and both of us fellows were hired on as Clinical Ethicists after our fellowship. We had hoped for this, and knew there might be room for us but with no guarantee until it actually happened. In the early months we were placed together at a couple of sites doing consults and education, as well as a tremendous amount of work doing accreditation preparation at one of our sites. This required us to basically meet as many teams and staff as possible to ensure they were up to speed on our principle-based ethical decision-making framework (a priority process) and the ethics service in general. Again, being involved in another accreditation, something which coincidentally happened at several sites over the course of the year but which only happens in cycles of three to four years, allowed for indispensable learning for us. We attended survey interviews with accreditors twice, once as fellows and once as ethicists, and both times helpfully participated. Accreditation lead-up also meant that we got to work very closely with many people on the accreditation preparation teams for months, and met a good portion of the hospital staff.

After accreditation, for which the ethics service did exceptionally well, it was clear to us that we had quickly become more integrated than we would have otherwise. Staffing shifted again and we finally could spread our wings and were placed at our own hospital sites. It hasn’t been very long at the time of writing, and I am working now at a secular hospital in Oshawa, but in that time I have inherited several committees from my predecessor such as the withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment literature and gender policy working groups, and the ethics committee which I will co-chair. I have already presented at an Interprofessional Grand Rounds with Chaplaincy and Social Work on clarifying our roles, and also at an Applied Buddhism conference at Emmanuel College on Buddhist end-of-life decision-making, again sharing new data for the first time. I report directly to the hospital VP and also will give quarterly reports to the Board, and in those reports education activities outside of the hospital are also valued and tracked. I am preparing my first Ethics Grand Rounds for the new site on gender in healthcare, coming from several education requests from staff. I am slowly meeting program directors and managers through which I can connect with the various teams and start to regularly attend rounds.

A very busy hospital that has had great ethics integration and support for years now, the consults have been pouring in (mostly triggered by MDs and Social Workers so far) and by email, phone and in-person I have been involved in many cases already. The doctorate is a valued degree at the CCE, and I would say also in hospitals that have ethics services, so early on I negotiated being able to have days off for dedicated writing of my dissertation when starting to work as an ethicist. Indeed, it is a challenge to be working in ethics and in my fifth doctoral year at the same time. In the first semester TA preparation has taken a great deal of my time, both after work and on off-days, but my plan is to continue to write as much as possible in 2017 in order to have a completed manuscript by August. For anyone interested in bioethics as a career, I would recommend both the JCB CPB which others in religious studies have also done, as well as the CCE fellowship as means of entering the field.

Confidence in myself as a scholar of religion

Sitting in the dark trunk of a shared Jeep— nearly being thrown out the back with every sharp turn— I held onto a metal bar to steady my body and sanity as it swiftly wove through one big windy road up a dusty mountain. While, inside, I wondered, “what on earth am I doing in Sikkim?”

Conducting research was not something I expected myself to be doing during my university career. At a young age I dreamed of travelling the world and immersing myself in different landscapes and cultures, however my shyness and cold feet stopped me from pursuing these dreams until I attended the University of Toronto. The amazing opportunities to go abroad, offered by the University, motivated me to put some faith in myself and pursue my dream. I approached my religion professor, Frances Garrett, whose classes sparked my interest in Buddhism and Himalayan religions. She encouraged me to seek religious research in different parts of the world and to apply for awards to get me across the globe and to find faith in extraordinary places. With the help of Professor Garrett, I worked tirelessly to apply for the Undergraduate Research Fund and the University of Toronto Excellence Awards. To my surprise, I received both of these awards! Receiving these awards was an astonishing achievement for me but the work had just begun.

I landed in Sikkim with an initial plan to conduct research, however, at first sight of the daunting mountains, I quickly realized the textbooks and pictures I had studied could not have prepared me for the journey that was about to unfold. Sikkim is a state of India, wedged in between Tibet, Bhutan, and Nepal in the Himalayan region. Its diverse climate and altitude ranges from sub-tropical, at 280 m above sea level in the southern region, to mountainous tundra, at altitudes over 8,000 m in the northern region, making it a habitat for a broad range of plant and animal species. A wide range of people, cultures, and, most importantly, religions inhabit Sikkim’s mountain landscape. Religion resonates loudly in the cities and farmlands with bells, prayers, horns, drums, and chanting that challenge the volume of mountains surrounding them. Overwhelmed by the spirituality of the landscape, I threw myself into the winding roads to investigate the churches, mosques, temples, shrines, monasteries, and homes of the people who inhabit these sacred lands. I talked to many different religious leaders and practitioners to try to understand the religious diversity of the Himalayan landscape and how the multitude of religions in Sikkim coexists so peacefully. I studied deeper into the history of Sikkim to uncover how each and every religion came to be in this place.

Sikkim was once an independent kingdom inhabited by three distinct tribes known as Lepcha, Bhutia, and Limboo. Lepchas were original inhabitants of Sikkim while Bhutias and Limboos were of Tibetan ancestry, whose ancestors climbed over the mountains from Tibet to seek refuge. The tribes developed their own animistic spiritualties until Buddhism proliferated through Sikkim in the 1600s and influenced these spiritualties. However, Guru Padmasambhava planted the seeds of Buddhism (terma texts of Buddhist teachings) in Sikkim, in the 8th century, before Buddhism became a prominent component of Sikkim’s culture. In 1975, Sikkim was absorbed by India, and its doors were opened to Indian tourists looking for an exotic, mountainous region to explore. Today, Sikkim is a religiously diverse place in which all religions coexist peacefully. However, Buddhism, a religion deeply engrained in Sikkim’s culture and history, is rendered a tourist attraction by tour agencies from other parts of India. Countless buses of tourists arrive at Buddhist temples and monasteries every day to observe a religion foreign and “exotic” to the rest of India.

The misrepresentation of Buddhism by tour agencies overshadows the beautiful peace between all religions in Sikkim, and creates an economic disparity between religious establishments. Tourism generates ample amounts of revenue for Buddhist monasteries and temples while leaving other established religions with none. A mosque I visited in Namchi, the main city of South Sikkim, was located inside a building abandoned in the middle of construction with only the cement frame built, the rebar still exposed, and with temporary metal sheets for walls— a completely unconventional place, for such a sacred space. Inside, the concrete is cold and unforgiving to your bare feet, rays of light shined in through gaps in the metal sheets onto the individual prayer rugs, which were arranged diagonally to face the direction of Mecca. I asked the imam of the mosque, “why is this unfinished building the location for this mosque?” He explained that this property was donated to them and is the only location they were provided. In 1997, the government of India issued a law that restricted non-indigenous people from owning land in Sikkim; since, most Muslims living in Sikkim have immigrated there, it is hard for them to find good land for mosques or homes to live in. Some religious establishments are forced to carve out sacred spaces in slums, where most of their followers live, due to the property restrictions. In Sikkim, mosques are not tourist attractions like Buddhist monasteries are, and do not acquire a lot of tourist revenue to erect big and elaborate temples to match the monasteries. Hindu temples are in a similar predicament, which became evident to me when I found a Hindu temple, in Gangtok, hidden behind a construction site that made it invisible to tourists. The unfinished temple was locked and abandoned due to lack of funding during construction since 2008. Without a temple Hindus have to compromise with shrines that exist mostly in poverty-stricken areas near the bottom of the mountains. Economic disparities are visible through the location of these Hindu shrines and mosques around poverty stricken communities near the bottom of the mountains, while Buddhist monasteries in more affluent communities are at the top. The opening of Sikkim to Indian tourists wrongly depicts Buddhism as an exotic object, overshadowing the beauty and peace between the many different religions in Sikkim, and has created a financial disparity between religious establishments through an uneven distribution of tourist revenue.

Going to Sikkim with a purpose to learn and understand its religions was the opportunity of a lifetime. The opportunity to learn about the religious dynamics of Sikkim, make lasting connections with people from around the globe, and discover Sikkim’s breathtaking landscape was made possible by the generous awards I received from the University of Toronto and the inspiration I received from Professor Garrett. In Sikkim, I found a purpose for myself through my research. This opportunity has given me confidence in myself as a future scholar of religion. Going to Sikkim is an experience I will keep with me for the rest of my life, and for this I owe my thanks to my professor, my department, and the awards that got me there.

Discovering India, discovering myself

We have finally made it to India and I am starting to understand the reason why people become severely addicted to traveling. There is obviously some enjoyment that can be experienced from being in a new place and perceiving a new culture. However, it is plausible that what is really meritorious about travelling is that it helps you understand and appreciate yourself in greater ways. Back home in Toronto, it is easy to forget who you are because you become lost in a monotonous crowd of accomplishing the daily grind. This may include finishing your education at the top of your class, making enough money to pay for rent in a ridiculously expensive city, and purchasing the most recent material items to show your friends that you are worth something. You are never really given the opportunity to discover who you are and what you are made of. It may seem cheesy and obvious to state this, but it definitely should be mentioned and not discounted. There are many things that I have witnessed up until this point that have really helped me in this aforementioned process of understanding who I am.

From my previous post, you can tell that the trip already had such a rough start. But, this just made the landing in Bagdogra all the more satisfying. Seeing Frances’ face was like finally eating after days of fasting. I am not sure how I remained so strong throughout the entire process, but I did. I took a breath of the Indian air and I felt like I could accomplish anything in that moment. That was until I saw the toilets in the Bagdogra airport. They were literally holes in the floor with a sprayer beside it. Obviously, they have not been cleaned in quite a bit of time and I had to decide in that moment, do I complete the task or do I move on and wait for another opportunity. Even though it was not something I am use to nor something I quite enjoy, I took the plunge and used my first Indian toilet. Just another experience that has really made me learn more about myself.

At the Bagdogra airport, we were greeted by monks from the Lingdum monastery high in the mountains. They brought us to their cars and the adventure through India began. I noticed right away the exceptionally different method of driving here. There is no concept of right of way or lanes. Essentially, beeping at cars, people or motorcycles around you gives them the signal to let you through and you maneuver around them. Of course, this made the driving incredibly disorienting and nerve wracking. I really held on to the side of the car and I had to keep telling myself not to puke all over the monk beside me. I do not think that would give me any sort of merit. The cars and scenery around me made it a lot easier to distract myself. All of the cars driving by were painted beautifully in primary colours, each a one of a kind. And to match the cars, all of the buildings were painted in similar colours. It was as if I entered a colourful wonderland, one that is enchanted with all sort of mystical powers. Also, as we were driving through the mountains, the wildlife was all around us. This took African Lion Safari to a whole new level. There were packs of monkeys sitting on the side of the road, as if it were their casual hang out spot. This is the jungle.

Unfortunately though, it got even worse after we entered Sikkim and headed for the monastery, which was about an hour away. Up until this point, the roads were curvy and near the edge of the mountains, but there was always a fence guarding us from a sudden fall to our death. So, it never really felt unsafe. But, as we approached the area of the Lingdum monastery, it became very dark, the roads became a lot smaller and the fence guarding us seemed to disappear. There were points going up this mountain where the car wheels were just about over the road and heading down the hill. I was amazed at how calm I was and what a great driver the monk was. At one point, we even had to drive through a water fall. The water was falling from the side of the mountain, leaving a strong current on the road. We needed to drive through it fast and cautious enough so the current did not take us with it.

Finally, after some serious height and altitude, we made it to the entrance doors of the monastery. It was like nothing I have ever seen before. I didn’t feel like I was about to enter a real monastery. I have read and studied them for several years now but it is one thing to study something and another to experience it first hand. Immediately, I fell in love. How does something like this exist in this world? The world I know is full of greed, lust, hate and trickery. A world where the opportunity for success seems to come at the cost of happiness. But, upon entry into this monastery, that other world was left behind. I am now in the new world, one more simplistic, sincere and honest.

It was too dark to really explore the grounds so I decided after the journey I have had so far, I should rest for the night. I was awoken at 4 am by chanting and bells from the main building. Unlike other places I have been to where I was woken by sounds of water or birds, this was very unusual. But, somehow, in someway, it made me feel comforted and at peace so I slowly drifted back into sleep. At 6 am, I woke back up again to start my day in this new world. My first task was to get clean and eat. One of those was definitely easier than the other. I entered the bathroom and I was a little taken back by what I saw. There was a toilet and a shower on opposite sides of this square room without any separation. I saw a drain and I realized that the whole room is really the shower and the water eventually drains out. I turned on the shower and only yellowy cold water came out. I couldn’t not shower! I smelled of airplane food and sweat. It was not a great situation. So, with the biggest need to get clean, I stuck my body under the cold water and began to shower. It was such an initial shock to my system and it was not easy. After I was done, I felt like I just ran a marathon. I was so pleased with myself. I washed my clothes by hand under the sink, got changed and went to breakfast.

As I was staring into the mountains in the distance, I began to think about why I was so proud of myself and why I felt accomplished. It made me realize that these common things like hot water, or a seated toilet, are really not necessary. People have lived before without them and they can live now without them as well. It made me start to question all of the things in my life that I felt were absolutely required and I started to realize that I could realistically spend the rest of my life in this monastery. I do not really need these “luxuries”. All I need is to be happy. Therefore, even though I am proud of getting through these cultural changes, I shouldn’t be. In fact, I should be disappointed that we have made our lives so easy in Canada that we cannot experience this satisfying feeling of overcoming something for ourselves. If you fight for something, your success is all the more satisfying. I think the saying goes, it is not about the destination but about the journey.

Anyway, this is just what travel is all about; expanding the world that you once knew. I now know I can live a more ascetic life if I choose to do so. But, maybe I won’t jump into that all too soon.
