“The Buddhist Digital Resource Center has gone through a tremendous period of growth since it changed its name and expanded its mission in 2015. Many of you recall the days when we were called Tibetan Buddhist Resource Center; indeed the legacy website still has the URL tbrc.org. BDRC remains the leader of the digital preservation and dissemination of traditional Tibetan books and our archive contains over 20 million pages of Tibetan texts, with close to a million pages being added annually. The transition from TBRC to BDRC involves digital preservation activities outside of the Tibetan cultural sphere and also the creation of an online resource that provides broad access to texts from many Buddhist textual traditions. BDRC is engaged in scanning projects in Southeast Asia, primarily palm leaf manuscripts in Burmese and Khmer scripts. The other marker of BDRC’s new mission is our new web platform. Some of the immediately recognizable advances on the new website are the highly flexible image viewer, the etext reader, and a search engine that returns far less “noise” than the legacy site.
This demonstration will introduce the new bibliographic model utilized on the platform, provide practical instructions for all of the main functions, and also introduce the non-Tibetan content now available on BDRC. The new platform is called BuDA (Buddhist Digital Archives) and you may wish to take a look at the user guide before the meeting.” – Jann Ronis
This event is co-hosted by the Cheng Yu Tung East Asian Library and the Robert H.N. Ho Family Foundation Centre for Buddhist Studies at the University of Toronto, and the C.V. Starr East Asian Library at Columbia University.
