Yitong is an MA student in the Department for the Study of Religion. Growing up in Chengdu, he received his BA in Religion Studies from the University of Toronto in 2018. With a broad interest in all Buddhist traditions, Yitong especially focuses on the textual, philological and linguistic studies of the Theravada Buddhism and the Pāli Canon. In his proposed MA project, he is researching the Burmese Buddhist polemical literature reacting to Christian missionary activities during Burmese colonial period (1824-1948), under the supervision of Professor Christoph Emmrich. Due to his strong interest in reading Buddhist primary sources, Yitong is continually practice reading texts in all Buddhist languages: Pāli, Sanskrit, Classical Tibetan, and Chinese.
