SUMMARY:Mark Aldenderfer\, "Rituals of Death: The Tombs of Tibet's First Ki
 ngs"
DESCRIPTION:Rituals of Death: The Tombs of Tibet’s First Kings\nMark Alde
 nderfer\, Professor Emeritus\nAnthropology &amp\; Heritage Studies\, Unive
rsity of California Merced\nIn the mid-7th century\, the Tibetan Empire wa
s ruled by kings who controlled much of the plateau and the surrounding re
gions of the Central Himalayas. Through conquest and tribute\, they became
wealthy and powerful\, and in death\, they are said to have taken much of
that wealth with them. Unlike their ancestors who were taken at death to
heaven on a rope to join their predecessors\, these rulers were interred i
n massive tombs in the Yarlung valley of central Tibet that housed not onl
y themselves\, but their attendants and even state ministers who accompani
ed them into the afterlife. In this lecture\, I describe the rise of the e
mpire\, the death rituals of these kings\, their tombs\, and the wider con
text of mortuary practice on the plateau and the Himalayas.\n6:10 pm EST A
